Many website owners who take on the task of search engine optimization themselves often do so without fully understanding the rules involved. For this reason, many of them commit some common mistakes. Among the most common ones include keyword stuffing and the inability to take advantage of Latent Semantic Indexing.

Latent Semantic Indexing, which is most commonly referred to as LSI, is the means by which search engines index and rank web pages in its results pages. It makes use of complex algorithms and it groups keywords together in order to generate the best and most relevant results. For this reason, if you are to take advantage of Latent Semantic Indexing, you must be sure that the keywords you use in your content are related to the other content in your site. This means that you will have to find more than just one keyword for your content and each of them have to be related to each other. Many website owners who attempt search engine optimization themselves without fully understanding its rules tend to use the same words over and over in their content. You will be unlikely to achieve the results you expect by doing this. You may even be accused of keyword stuffing which will lead your site to become indexed poorly or not indexed at all.

Keyword stuffing became a popular method of getting sites indexed easily in the past and many website owners have done this for their search engine optimization efforts. However, search engine algorithms have changed to discourage this. Apart from being indexed poorly, keyword-stuffed pages will not be appealing to your readers. This will lead to poor traffic. If you are selling products or offering services, those who visit your site will be unlikely to avail of what you have to offer. For this reason, you must never make the mistake of publishing content just for search engines. You must write text in a natural manner. If you are writing on a specific topic that is relevant to your site, the keywords will come out naturally.

Making use of the right amount of the right keywords is one of the most important elements of search engine optimization. However, you must fully understand it and do it right in order to make your search engine optimization campaign successful.

SEOInc.com has been in the top 10 every month since the award was invented in 2005 (very nice!), and even though this is their second month in a row claiming the #1 spot, it is their ninth overall time taking it home. Nine time champs - way to go!

Congrats to SEOInc.com! Awesome company with a lot to offer, and with clients like Sony, AT&T, and other high profile companies, not to mention the constant barrage of awards they win, it’s hard to go wrong with them!

If you can afford it, of course

On another note, if you’re interested in possibly winning an 8GB ipod from PromotionWorld, all you have to do is head over to their voting page, and cast your vote for the “Reader’s Choice Award” for best SEM company of 2008. You’ll see many, many recognizable names on the list (SEOInc, Bruce Clay, SEO.com, HubSpot, etc…), so it is definitely the real deal. But hurry, voting closes tomorrow, January 14th, so get your vote in now and stay tuned on February 2nd when they announce the winner.

Good luck to all the companies and to the voters!

When you have done the necessary research on the keywords that are related to your website, make a list of all those you would like to use. This list is important as it will determine how you will go about the rest of your search engine optimization efforts. It doesn’t exactly matter how you go about compiling the keywords on your list. The criteria will be up to you. All that matters is that the keywords you choose are relevant to your site and are those that people actually use to find the information you have to offer. Once you have completed your list, you will be ready to go about the rest of your search engine optimization efforts.

The key to search engine optimization is to be consistent with the keywords that you use. This is the reason why it is important to come up with a keyword list and stick with it. You don’t necessarily have to use all of the keywords in your list in each of the search engine optimization tactics you make use of. What matters is that you are consistent.

The keywords on your list should be included in strategic places within the technical aspects of your website. This includes your title tags, header tags, and meta tags. They should also be found within your content. Once you have used your keywords within your website, it would be time for you to pursue other search engine optimization tactics. This should include link building. To do this, you may want to submit your site to web directories that search engine spiders crawl most often. Site submission also requires a list of relevant keywords and it would be important for you to use the same ones.

Your list of keywords will play a huge role not just in search engine optimization but in your entire internet marketing campaign. It is not only important in optimizing your site but also for link building purposes. It should also be used for your pay-per-click campaign. No matter what you do for your internet marketing campaign, be sure to use the same keywords consistently as this is the only way you can make your search engine optimization efforts effective.

Search engine optimization is actually not a very difficult thing to do - but it can be quite a tedious task. If you plan on doing it yourself, you would first have to learn everything there is to know about search engine optimization. You must read through its rules and guidelines as well as familiarize yourself with the search engine algorithms (good luck with that). It would also help if you can read up on common mistakes for you to avoid.

Never stop reading up and researching on search engine optimization because the rules and algorithms can easily change (and often they change on even a weekly basis). However, once you have learned the basics, you can start to optimize your site by going through the code and making sure that your keywords are placed in strategic locations such as the title tags, meta tags, and header tags of each page. You should also make sure that all the content you publish are keyword-rich pieces of attractive content that please the gods of search.

When you have optimized your site, it would be time to do your search engine optimization externally. Among the most important things to do is plan and execute a link building campaign. Link building is really what puts asses in the seats. This involves doing everything you can to have many other web pages linking to yours. You also must be sure that the links are of high quality and of great relevance to the information you have on your site. Link farms and other felonious linking methods are worthless and even harmful to every bit of SEO work you do. But you knew that, right?

There are many other things you have to do to execute an effective search engine optimization campaign. Furthermore, you have to do everything continuously or you can easily lose your ranking to your competitors. And trust me, your competitors will always be keeping an eye on your SEO activities - SEO spying is easy to do. You can easily do search engine optimization on your own but it will require a lot of time and effort. It may even keep you away from doing other necessary things to run your business. For this reason, it may be best for your to hire an agency or a professional individual with experience in search engine optimization. That way, you can get and maintain high rankings in search engine results pages and have your business running smoothly at the same time.

Leave the task of gaining targeted traffic to the professionals. It’s not that you can’t do it, it’s just a matter of time. Do you have enough time to focus on a full fledge SEO campaign? Probably not. Sure, I could fix a plumbing problem myself after reading a book on it, but the amount of time it takes to learn what I need to do, and do it right, is not as efficient as just paying a professional plumber to do it for me. Make sense? Good, I thought so.

If you are not sure if you need to do SEO on your site - ask yourself - do I want to make money from my site? If you answered a resounding yes, then you might want to take some time to consider that SEO in essence, is just like money, really! (Unless of course you plan to go the subsistence farming route and drop out to live in southern climates, somewhere you can grow your own food year round…). The reality is that if you are online doing some sort of internet marketing enterprise, then you need to start building some enthusiasm for SEO and other forms of search marketing. If you are eager to get plenty of traffic to your site and boost your page rank in the major search engines, then you have to promote yourself. The tricky part is making sure you do so in a manner that is suitable and measured by the search engine algorithms. On the surface this can sounds straightforward, but it can take a skill and experience to really balance this well.

To get your SEO on track you have the ‘easy’ part with the clicking and completing of online forms with the correct details. The ‘easy’ part is that it doesn’t require a lot of brain power to do this, the not so easy part is that it takes a lot of time and energy. The downside to the ‘easy’ part is that it is very tedious, boring and often slow going. To get it right you probably need to do a mass of manual data input, getting the right details in place for each article and each search engine that you are submitting to. The repetitious work leads a lot of internet marketers to start thinking - surely there’s a better way? Of course it didn’t take long before someone developed ways to automate this process and if you want to get your SEO happening a whole lot faster, then the use of automation would make things much simpler.

Nowadays, there are many software tools available that will now make filling in forms easier and will relieve you from countless boring hours doing manual submissions in a bid to boost your page rank. These tools can support the tasks with little user assistance, they can utilize the data you store and retrieve it to complete forms and submit information much faster than any manual option does. Of course the logical question then might be - why isn’t everyone using these tools if you could make a bunch of money online that easily?

The reality is, nothing is ever as cut and dried as that. To get really good results online, you need to understand how to create sites that look good and meet the standards that the search engines require. This is the part that is not so easy. To do this successfully, you need to know what is needed to achieve a quality site, what the search engine algorithms measure and how to maximize your sit for all this.

Experience is what tends to be the most important thing here. There are a lot of people out there that can give you further information about this or will assist you with this for a nominated fee. If you want to get up the search engine rankings, there are a lot of factors to consider. Be prepared for the learning curve and be persistent to get the results you desire. You could start today!

I always thought of our Government officials as technologically challenged (some of our leaders brag about not being able to use the internet, which makes them look pretty stupid in the eyes of younger generations), but I guess the phrase “better late than never” holds true.

Several pages (channels) were created, including the HouseHub and the SenateHub on Youtube, which features high profile names like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell and other big Government all-stars. What’s even better is that when you click on one of those channels, you’re presented with a pretty cool map and each state is linked to its respective members of Congress’ YouTube channels. I thought that was pretty cool. Now we’ll have to keep an eye on them and see who actually uses it and keeps it updated. I think it would be a great tool for re-elections (obviously as we saw in the past election), and as Harry Reid explained, it was made to, “make your government more transparent and accessible.” Nothing wrong with that, especially in light of recent events.

Anyway, we’ll see what happens!

Building your SEO via an organic means is a slow and steady project. To achieving a rank at the top of the search engines requires patience and consistency. Link building is part of the way in which the site secures a high rank, the more relevant the links to your site, the better your rank will be. The number of links and the strength or quality of those links will depend upon the keywords you are targeting on your site and the number of competitors for those keywords. Some web masters will disregard quality, concentrating solely on securing links to their site in a hurry. The problem with this is that search engines don’t view this very favorably. If you are every unsure it may be well worth the time necessary to check out the guidelines of the search engine that you are aiming to achieve a high page rank or optimize for. Use the search engine guidelines as an indication of what is acceptable and unacceptable to secure a high page rank.

If you want to secure links from other sites, focus on the quality of the link, rather than focusing on quantity. Consider whether the page is relevant to the topics covered in your site. Look at where the link will be placed on the other site. Is it to one side or with a number of other sites? Has the link been placed on the site in a natural manner and like it belongs there? Finally, consider if the link is placed in anchor text, or is it just a link to your page with or without the page title? Weigh up these questions to evaluate the quality of links directed at your site. When the site provides reciprocal links then you may have the opportunity to boost the link value, but the automation of such processes with software has seen the value of this reduced. If you are linking from directories, be cautious about the quality of the directory. You might prefer not to have a poor quality directory linking to you, simply for the sake of another link.

Securing permanent one way links is another boost for your site. To achieve this, you should look at getting listed in quality directories and if you have a keyword with only a small amount of competition, this will boost you’re page rank quickly. Good directories are also a source of relevant traffic. Look for those that have a good reputation and are human edited. Going for directories that are held in high regard will mean you can increase the relevance of your site and again boost your rank.

You may also get links from businesses or organizations whose products or services you sell or make use of. I have a link to my site from the company whose shopping cart and this link was as simple as asking them if they would post the link to my site. One way to secure a link is to offer something such as a testimonial in return for the other site placing your link on their page.

A highly effective way to boost your traffic is to write articles for article directories and use this to generate more traffic as well as build solid incoming links. A range of free sites accept article submissions. The advantage with these submissions are there will be few other links on the page and the article will be closely connected to the product you are promoting.

You might also like to look at writing press releases to let the world know about your business, the new services you are offering, plus any extra news you feel is important. Using press releases will generate several links and they tend to remain online for a long time which is an added bonus.

One of the most sure fire ways to get a whole bunch of links for your site is by getting other people to link because they think your site is great. This is of course, not necessarily as easy as it sounds and we all wish for just such a site. If you have a highly informative site or on that has things like frequently asked questions and helpful hints, then this is more likely to generate organic links from other sites. Giving away information is not necessarily a bad thing. Provide quality information and most people will tend to view you more highly and it gives you added credibility. If a potential customer finds your site when they are looking for the answer for a particular situation - if your site is chocked with quality information, then they are also going to look to come to you to get further information or to purchase the product or service. There will be a host of other sites out there that will be eager to place links to high quality information; it’s the ‘web’ for just this reason! If you uncover a good site let others know, this will also encourage sites that are keen to link to your pages.

Make your link building slow and steady to secure a good, organic ranking and to secure your longer term success in your web business.

You know, I was just thinking about this the other day. SEO may be made out to be this complicated, time consuming process that you have to know inside and out to get the most return on the time you spend doing it. That’s one of the main reasons that people hire SEO firms to manage their SEO activities because they’re under a false assumption that unless you’re an SEO genius, you need help.

Well, to an extent, some of the above drivel is true.

However, a lot of people seem to overlook one of the main things that search engines look for in a website - helpful/informational content.

You see, Google cares deeply about serving up the absolute most relevant information that it can when an end user performs a search query, as their bottom line counts on it. Think about it - you use Google most of the time because it works, right? That’s the plan, as simple as it may sound. The complex and alien-like algorithms behind the magic of Google are primarily geared to scour the web and instantly pull the most relevant result possible.

So what am I getting at?

I just wanted to take this little space of mine and remind webmasters/bloggers and anyone else who dreams of top rankings that there is more to SEO than what you hear about on the surface. I won’t repeat the phrase “content is king” (wait, I just did) because it’s overused and quite simply most of us know how obvious it is. However, I would like to change that saying to freshen it up a bit:

“Good” content is king (or Queen, whatever you prefer).

There, is that a little better? Seriously though, provide helpful content that helps people, and I promise you, you’ll eventually be rewarded by Google with longer standing high rankings and much better visability. We tend to get caught up in the SEO ratrace and get so sidetracked by all of the other elements important to SEO that we forget about the actual part that allows us to rank well. Google isn’t perfect, and people will always try to “game” it (and many do successfully “game” Google every day), but just do your part, and you’ll be blessed. Please the people, and you’ll please Google.

There is a right way and a wrong way to use a forum to promote a website. You should understand that a forum is essentially a community driven website. The information which is exchanged between the members of the community is being directly generated by experts within the forum and new members who are asking questions. Capturing the true essence of a successful forum marketing campaign can produce extremely targeted leads for your website.

Crossing over into the dark side of forum marketing is the use of what is labeled as “SPAM”. Avoiding being labeled as a “Spammer” is something that should not be forgotten at anytime. Like the saying goes, “Once a spammer, always a spammer”.

So what is the right way to use a forum for promoting a website?

The answer is that you should be promoting yourself, not the website!

If you are trying to promote a website on a forum, then you will almost always be seen as a spammer. So instead, you should be promoting yourself. Try to position yourself into the community as an expert of your niche. Offer advice and coaching for those on the forum who are posting questions or seem like they may be in need of help. If you can be looked up to as an authority figure in the niche, then people will want to listen to anything that you have to say. Your recommendations will be looked at as gospel. This is the effect that you want to have on the forum audience in order to produce effective marketing results.

Even if you don’t have much knowledge of your website niche, which is extremely bad in the first place, you can still offer helpful and accurate advice and information. If you are responding to a question or offering a word of advice to somebody who posts on a forum, you can always Google the question and read what you can find. Then take that information and come up with a good answer. This tactic alone can lead to a nice following from forum users. People love when there is a guru that they can go to and ask questions.

So go out there and locate a few good forums in your website niche and sign up for an account. Either post to the forum yourself, or hire somebody to do the posting for you. Before you know it, you will have another source of quality leads for your website. A good place to start? How about a shameless plug for one of my make money online forums.
