Several pages (channels) were created, including the HouseHub and the  SenateHub on Youtube, which features high profile names like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell and other big Government all-stars. What’s even better is that when you click on one of those channels, you’re presented with a pretty cool map and each state is linked to its respective members of Congress’ YouTube channels. I thought that was pretty cool. Now we’ll have to keep an eye on them and see who actually uses it and keeps it updated. I think it would be a great tool for re-elections (obviously as we saw in the past election), and as Harry Reid explained, it was made to, “make your government more transparent and accessible.” Nothing wrong with that, especially in light of recent events.

If you want to secure links from other sites, focus on the quality of the link, rather than focusing on quantity. Consider whether the page is relevant to the topics covered in your site. Look at where the link will be placed on the other site. Is it to one side or with a number of other sites? Has the link been placed on the site in a natural manner and like it belongs there? Finally, consider if the link is placed in anchor text, or is it just a link to your page with or without the page title? Weigh up these questions to evaluate the quality of links directed at your site. When the site provides reciprocal links then you may have the opportunity to boost the link value, but the automation of such processes with software has seen the value of this reduced. If you are linking from directories, be cautious about the quality of the directory. You might prefer not to have a poor quality directory linking to you, simply for the sake of another link.

Securing permanent one way links is another boost for your site. To achieve this, you should look at getting listed in quality directories and if you have a keyword with only a small amount of competition, this will boost you’re page rank quickly. Good directories are also a source of relevant traffic. Look for those that have a good reputation and are human edited. Going for directories that are held in high regard will mean you can increase the relevance of your site and again boost your rank.

You may also get links from businesses or organizations whose products or services you sell or make use of. I have a link to my site from the company whose shopping cart and this link was as simple as asking them if they would post the link to my site. One way to secure a link is to offer something such as a testimonial in return for the other site placing your link on their page.

A highly effective way to boost your traffic is to write articles for article directories and use this to generate more traffic as well as build solid incoming links. A range of free sites accept article submissions. The advantage with these submissions are there will be few other links on the page and the article will be closely connected to the product you are promoting.

You might also like to look at writing press releases to let the world know about your business, the new services you are offering, plus any extra news you feel is important. Using press releases will generate several links and they tend to remain online for a long time which is an added bonus.

One of the most sure fire ways to get a whole bunch of links for your site is by getting other people to link because they think your site is great. This is of course, not necessarily as easy as it sounds and we all wish for just such a site. If you have a highly informative site or on that has things like frequently asked questions and helpful hints, then this is more likely to generate organic links from other sites. Giving away information is not necessarily a bad thing. Provide quality information and most people will tend to view you more highly and it gives you added credibility. If a potential customer finds your site when they are looking for the answer for a particular situation - if your site is chocked with quality information, then they are also going to look to come to you to get further information or to purchase the product or service. There will be a host of other sites out there that will be eager to place links to high quality information; it’s the ‘web’ for just this reason! If you uncover a good site let others know, this will also encourage sites that are keen to link to your pages.

Well, to an extent, some of the above drivel is true.

However, a lot of people seem to overlook one of the main things that search engines look for in a website - helpful/informational content.

You see, Google cares deeply about serving up the absolute most relevant information that it can when an end user performs a search query, as their bottom line counts on it. Think about it - you use Google most of the time because it works, right? That’s the plan, as simple as it may sound. The complex and alien-like algorithms behind the magic of Google are primarily geared to scour the web and instantly pull the most relevant result possible.

So what am I getting at?

I just wanted to take this little space of mine and remind webmasters/bloggers and anyone else who dreams of top rankings that there is more to SEO than what you hear about on the surface. I won’t repeat the phrase “content is king” (wait, I just did) because it’s overused and quite simply most of us know how obvious it is. However, I would like to change that saying to freshen it up a bit:

“Good” content is king (or Queen, whatever you prefer).

There, is that a little better? Seriously though, provide helpful content that helps people, and I promise you, you’ll eventually be rewarded by Google with longer standing high rankings and much better visability. We tend to get caught up in the SEO ratrace and get so sidetracked by all of the other elements important to SEO that we forget about the actual part that allows us to rank well. Google isn’t perfect, and people will always try to “game” it (and many do successfully “game” Google every day), but just do your part, and you’ll be blessed. Please the people, and you’ll please Google.

There is a right way and a wrong way

Crossing over into the dark side of forum marketing is the use of what is labeled as “SPAM”. Avoiding being labeled as a “Spammer” is something that should not be forgotten at anytime. Like the saying goes, “Once a spammer, always a spammer”.

So what is the right way to use a forum for promoting a website?

The answer is that you should be promoting yourself, not the website!

If you are trying to promote a website on a forum, then you will almost always be seen as a spammer. So instead, you should be promoting yourself. Try to position yourself into the community as an expert of your niche. Offer advice and coaching for those on the forum who are posting questions or seem like they may be in need of help. If you can be looked up to as an authority figure in the niche, then people will want to listen to anything that you have to say. Your recommendations will be looked at as gospel. This is the effect that you want to have on the forum audience in order to produce effective marketing results.

Even if you don’t have much knowledge of your website niche, which is extremely bad in the first place, you can still offer helpful and accurate advice and information. If you are responding to a question or offering a word of advice to somebody who posts on a forum, you can always Google the question and read what you can find. Then take that information and come up with a good answer. This tactic alone can lead to a nice following from forum users. People love when there is a guru that they can go to and ask questions.

So go out there and locate a few good forums in your website niche and sign up for an account. Either post to the forum yourself, or hire somebody to do the posting for you.
